Dear Diary,
We slept well in this quiet campground. Chuck saw a black bear very close by this morning. Chuck spoke with one of our neighbors, a couple on our same trip from Minnesota. They have a cracked windshield in several places. They claim was that some semi coming toward them did it. Pat doesn't think that is logical. Then they tell us they went to Top of the World, Chicken and Eagle and places like that. Now we know how the windshield got cracked. These are marginal roads at best. We have done those highways when we lived in Ak and it was always a very dicey move. We lost a few tires driving up there. We didn't think Great Ak RV's condoned us taking those roads. Whatever, we are intact. We drive into Anchorage, less than 15 miles away to go to the RV Center for grey water dump and to fill the fresh water. Then stop off at a couple grocery places to pick up food for our dinner. Back at our E.R. campsite we pitch a couple dining canopies because it is sure to rain but we aren't cancelling our cook out. Bren says, Mom these are Alaskans, they go ahead with their plans no matter what. We have our campfire started and the grill is cooking. Our friends begin to arrive and it is so much fun to catch up with them. It's like no time passes and they remain fun-loving, funny, interesting people. Lots of news and retelling old stories. The rain is a continuous drizzle but the campfire keeps up. We have a big chocolate mousse cake with huge chocolate roses and 30th birthday candles for Brenna's belated birthday. Friend Sue comes with a favorite bottle of chardonnay and 2 crystal wine glasses for she and Pat. Making it a very special celebration. The list of VIP's: Brenna and friend Zach; Lynda Simmons, Terry and John Powell and Cheryl Isley, all from our old babysitting coop; Sue and John Rajek, friends through Sue's cousin Gale who lived in Ak, Sue was present at Pat's surprise birthday party in AK when she turned 30; Rose McLean, our diaconal minister from St John, who is retiring this month for Oklahoma. We are so happy to see her before she goes. Sarah Calloway, whose family were our neighbors and went to grade school with Brenna. And Karen Bitzer who moved to Ak from Ohio and we met in Ak through PTA. This is the best ever ending to our RV adventure. Surrounded by old friends, delighting in their presence and the warm glow of friendship. They are all dear to us! We break up around 10PM and it's still daylight. It's been a great evening but we have to have our act together early in the morning. This ends the 18 days of RV travel. Savoring a night to remember we hit the sack. Travel Time: 3 hours Mileage 50
