Dear Diary
We slept very late this morning. All the travel, adjustments, and parties have caught up with us. We take our time and head out for walking the downtown area. We stop at various gift shops and check out this year's offerings. We love the little Alaska artist shops that have sprung up. It's bright but overcast at 50 degrees. The blue lobelia and gold marigold hanging baskets hang from every lam post. There are many flower beds planted with large dahlias, begonias and others. We walk through the downtown open market. This is very much a tourist oriented market and we find fewer stalls and not as much handmade articles. The entertainment is still quite good. Actors reciting Robert Service poems and stories and very talented musicians. There are many food stalls with all sorts of cuisine. We walk over to F Street Cafe for lunch. It's still one of our favorite places to be. It's a quaint small double bar with little cafe tables. Usually we have to wait to be seated but we get a table seat right away. They have a large block of cheese that anyone can shave off for a snack. Pat gets her usual smoked salmon spread with capers, onions and baguette slices. And Chuck gets a hot crab sandwich. We finish off with the cafe candy jar, filled with assorted goodies of our choice. We continue to investigate various stores looking for gifts and mementos. There are at least 2 other street fairs going on. One is geared around gardening. We stop at the Visitors Center on 4th Ave and take a couple more pics of the log cabin with the sod roof. We have several in our albums by it's still a favorite place. Lots of tourists visiting downtown. Many are on bus tours. Anchorage is just one big summer party and many of the pubs have live entertainment. The city is clean and they have constructed some interesting canvas sidewalk covers near Humpy's. And there are some other designs of cover scattered around. Given the weather it allows walking around in the rain, more pleasant. Brenna texts us from Ninilchik and they are on their way home with fresh seafood. We are having a late night dinner with she, Zack and Laura and Dave when they get back into town. We stop off for a few groceries for the dinner and Chuck picks up a fishing license at Fred Meyers. The group is going downtown to Ship Creek to fish for King salmon in the morning. We go back to the hotel to rest up until we go out again. These late nights are killers! But fun. The temperature has dropped at least 10 degrees since this morning and the mountains are socked in. It feels like snow and we're curious if we'll see some when the clouds separate. The 'kids' don't get back into town until 8PM and they begin to fix dinner. Dave shucks fresh oysters from Kachemak Bay and Chuck makes his famous cocktail sauce. Brenna takes local smoked salmon and makes a spread. Zach cooks their just caught halibut with lemon and herbs and he steams king crab. We add some fresh steamed asparagus with herbs and it's a feast. We have a great time hearing about Laura and Dave's trip and what is happening in Nashville where they live. It's a great meal but it's also midnight and time for sleep. Night.
